David was also getting little rest. He was touring the country putting on shows before packed audiences with proceeds going to refugee relief for Poland, Hungary, and other countries occupied by Nazi or Soviet forces.

At each stop he told and retold the stories of the plight of the people under fascist or communist rule, and his crowds responded as everyone would expect freedom loving Americans to respond. They might still view it as a European problem, but it now had a face, and few Americans could stomach women and children needlessly slaughtered, starved, or freezing to death and homeless in the teeth of winter.

In his own way, David was doing as much to prepare the nation for the war that was on the horizon as his brother was with all of this technological wonders.

In Madison, Wisconsin, just before the show, David got word that German U-boats had successfully sunk a convoy of American relief ships, along with the two destroyers sent along as their escorts. It sparked a fire in the American people. In an outpouring of support that he had only seen once in his lifetime—the days and weeks following the September eleventh attacks in 2001—the country united and turned against the Nazis. It took a joint session of Congress only twelve hours to officially declare war on Nazi Germany, officially bringing the United States into the war.

The following night in Chicago, David had contacted the Army recruiter's office. Before he began the concert, right after taking the stage, he officially took the oath before the screaming crowds. Like an alter call at a tent revival, the twelve recruiters positioned around the room were swarmed by young men following his lead. The concert and all of the surrounding events were broadcast nationwide the following day, leading to lines at the recruiter's offices. The newspapers picked up the story, and the lines around the recruiting offices expanded.

Following the United States, France too entered the war in earnest. Pushing across the Maginot Line and swarming troops into Germany proper. This of course triggered Spain and Italy to officially move into the war as well on the side of the Russians and Germans. Even Portugal, who still professed its desire to remain neutral, began to mobilize troops along its border with Spain, out of sheer self-preservation. Over the course of three short days, the scope of the war doubled.

On day nine after the declaration of war, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. On a war footing this time around, the losses by the American Navy were much less. No longer caught sleeping, the Arizona still sank and most of the fleet scattered, but they were able to regroup under the command of Admiral Husband Edward Kimmel.

Distraught by what he saw as his failure to foresee the attack, Admiral Kimmel took personal command of the reconstituted fleet and set off in search of the carrier fleet commanded by Vice Admiral Nagumo.

Pictures on the front page of most newspapers the day before the Pearl Harbor attack were of Private David Levin getting his first Basic Training regulation haircut.
